iRacing
In the road section of iRacing is a big selection of the most famous cars and racetracks from the international motorsport available. The racetracks are scanned with lasers to achieve the highest accuracy possible inside of the simulation. Even cracks, curbs or other characteristics which are used to be reference points for braking or the turn in points are modeled with a high attention to detail. Also the temperature, air humidity and sun or shadow have an impact on the cars behavior. All those details combined are creating are very realistic environment for virtual motorsport. Another benefit of iRacing is the highly detailed vehicle dynamics model which is the key to get the simulation as realistic as possible. The information to model car virtual race cars are extracted directly from the CAD model or through laserscans. The last method to gain the secret information is to disassemble the real cars and put them on a scale and measure them. Because of this attention to detail in iRacing are highly detailed race cars. The next step is to put different single weights the associated inertia into the physical model to achieve the important parameters like the hight of the centre of gravity, the weight distribution and the inertia of the whole car as close as possible to the real car. Very important is the accuracy of the brake system. If the model is very accurate the feedback of the pedal force applied from the the driver in relation to the deceleration and the basic handling of the vehicle under braking is realistic. Also the modeling of the aerodynamic behavior in relation to speed and body movement is displayed very accurate. This ist very important because the overall performance of the modern race cars is very dependent from the aerodynamic performance. It is also a very powerful tool to change der handling of the car with the different setups. In the end the exact numbers in terms of suspension kinematics as well as the damper characteristics have to work with the tyre model in a very good way to be as realistic as possible. In those chases iRacing is developing their system which are the benchmark at the moment even further and improve them with every update.
iRacing distances itself from other simulations like Assetto Corsa through the gameplay which focusses totally on the online competition against other real drivers around the world. In this case the drivers gain and loose Safety Rating and iRating Points depending on their driving discipline and the driving skills and results. With this System is ensured that the level of skill from the drivers in one race slot is pretty equal and everybody has a real chance to get a good result. Mistakes like an Off-Track, loose of control or a contact with other cars will be penalized with incident points. Those will have an impact on the Safety Rating. Incidents like cutting a corner are penalized immediately with a slow down period. If a driver exceeds a incident point limit in a race he gets penalized or disqualified depending on the rules of the race. If a driver acts extremely unsportsmanlike he can be reported to iRacing. The stuff of iRacing will have a look on the situation and will penalize the driver if necessary. This system leads overall to pretty fair racing compared with other simulations. Also the damage model works very well and leads to fair and realistic racing.
The only real negative point are the high costs due to the subscription with the extra cars and tracks to buy compared to other simulations.
Assetto Corsa / Competizione
The selection of different racetracks provided by Assetto Corsa is not as big as in iRacing. But through to the laser scans the quality of those tracks is really good also. Because there are street and racecars available the selection of cars is bigger than in iRacing. The gib benefit of Assetto Corsa is that it´s an open source software. Therefore the amount of racetracks is bigger than in iRacing. But not all of the racetracks and cars avaliable through the open source are in such a high quality. The focus of Assetto Corsa Competizione is down to the GT3 and GT4 cars. Both Assetto Corsa and Competition come with a very good and advanced vehicle dynamics and tyre model. The large amount of possibilities to change and optimize the setup is an asset too. In Assetto Corsa you can change the tyre pressure and the compound while in iRacing you are only able to change the tyre pressure. In the past it was only possible to drive in daylight but with some external packages it's also possible to drive in the night in both Assetto Corsa and Competizione. In Assetto Corsa Competizione it's also possible to drive in the wet.
In iRacing the gameplay is focused on the online competition against other SimRacers. In Assetto Corsa it´s also possible to start a career and drive against cars which are controlled from the computer. In the career mode you can Adamt the skills of the computer to your own performance level to have fun. With Assetto Corsa it´s also possible to compete in races in the VRL Endurance Series or other competitions with your own team or alone. Another big benefit compared to iRacing are the much lower costs to play this game. You only have to pay the game once.
DATA ENGINEERING
iRacing Setup
In simulations like iRacing you get a high variety of sensor signals. You can analyse them standalone or calculate different complex relationships to increase the car and driver performance even further. Because of possible technical defects often the quality of the data is better than in real racecars. To reach the highest level of performance, a professional engineered setup can give you the advantage above your competitors.
With the professional Motel i2Pro Software in combination with the subjective handling impressions you can optimize the behavior of the car. Therefore you can improve the overall performance as well as the consistency.
In general you can analyze the data in two different perspectives. First are the driver related information like throttle, brake and steering input. Further you can analyze all physical car related information like oversteer and untersteer, damper settings or the behavior of the tyres. To do so you can work with key performance indicators. With those it's easier to compare different laps or drivers.
HARDWARE
In real racecars the driver is feeling the behavior of the car through the lateral and longitudinal accelerations and is able to drive on the limit. In the simulator the driver is missing those accelerations to his body and the information about the actual driving situation has been given through the steering wheel and the pedals. The better the hardware of your simulator the more accurate you can feel the handling of the car.
TOP LEVEL HARDWARE
At the moment probably the best feedback you can get vom the direct driving engines. Leading manufacturers for those direct drive engines are Fanatec and Simucube. For the optimum performance it´s perfect to the have a brake pedal with which can regulate the brake pressure with the displacement and the force of the pedal. With more settings available while driving it is good to have a steering wheel which has enough buttons. This will make it easy to adjust lot of things while driving and expense your performance further more. The last step would be to set up your simulator with a full motion system to let you feel the handling of the car and the surface of the racetrack even more detailed.

Die steerings wheels listed below are a very good entry level to the world of sim racing without spending a lot of money. The processing quality is very good for the low price. They also replicate the handling of the car good enough to have fun and set some fast lap times. Disadvantages are the little lack of precision through to the belt drive. Another disadvantage ist the brake pedal. You can only apply the brake pressure with the travel of the brake pedal while the force in the pedal stays nearly constant. Because of this it can be very hard to brake constantly on the limit with cars which don't have the assistance of ABS.
